Patrick Stewart really brings his A-game trying to be both the wolf-of-war Macbeth and the is-he-insane-or-just-emotioinal Stalin. This setting for the play really makes the scene with Malcom and Macduff make so much more sense.

In an "iron curtain" setting, of COURSE Malcom would want to make sure Macduff had moral character rather than just trying to climb the ladder and attain power!

One person found this helpful. This production proves by far the universal application of The Bards works. The interpretation is well thought, and the performances excellent.

Best of all, they do not take liberties with the dialog. I enjoyed watching this much better than the theatrical one that came out in Stewart is brilliant, the direction is innovative and amazing!

See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Having missed the West End run of this, I'm delighted that it's now on DVD, and that they've done such a superb job of it.

Welbeck Abbey is such a fine location - it looks like a Soviet nightmare, and I want to go there. This is not a place for an in-depth critique of the text, save to note that its quality is inconsistent, and that the Scottish ruling cadre that it presents is ill-defined.

As with Dickens, a director really has to trim, to adapt, just as much as Hemming and Condell compounded.

There's no suggestion in the text that Ross is the anonymmous 'Lord' of Act3 Sc6, nor that Lennox is torturing him, for instance, and in the text the first lines are those of the witches, while this version starts with the 'bloody man', who delivers his speeches before one witch injects him full of death, and 'Where shall we three meet again?

The production has no reserve in getting its hands not just dirty, but gory to the armpits; Fleance may escape the train on which Banquo is liquidated, but the ensuing purge takes many others.

Macbeth's portrait, very much in the manner of Stalin, dominates the banquet which, it is quite clear, the diners only care about leaving alive.

The fear of Macbeth is palpable, and when Angus makes to light up, Macbeth takes and crumples the cigarette, sprinkling the tobacco over his head.

Angus does not dare brush it off. The 'musical mop' dance - where the odd one out has to dance with the mop - has a horrrifc subtext of 'which of us ends up getting tortured?

Seyton, the old man and the porter all get merged into one person - Christopher Patrick Nolan - and he plays it very well - sinister and campy - though I'd prefer them as three different people.

Paul Shelley provides a suitably imperial Duncan, though I'd have liked to hear the martlet line when he arrived in the game-strewn kitchens of Glamis - 'Martlet for dinner!

I love Martlet! The final battle scenes look like WW2 Eastern Front newsreel - all Buddlea, cordite and confusion, with Mac the only one still in focus.

Patrick Stewart is superb as Macbeth - an ordinary soldier infected with and destroyed by kingship - he seems just about to start to enjoy being king in the scene where he and his wife are majestically sitting on horseback, but no - he's planning the murder of his friend Banquo, so he's not happy at all.

He clings to power, terrified of losing it, as it destroys him cell by cell, like a desease. This is a very finely played performance of a man turned into a monster by his own ambition, and all too aware of the humanity he has lost.

And Kate Fleetwood is brilliant as Mrs Mac; running from termagent to murdress to nervous wreck to madness. All steely, hooded-eyed, sexual menace at the start, then desperate to save her man from insanity at the banquet Banquo is on the table, which would upset him , then sonambulic nightmare and washing her hands with bleach in a telly-shouting scene of 'For goodness sake!

There's taps right in front of you - get those hands under running water now! They are incredibly sinister - none of the pointy hats and cats and hooked noses - just cold, malign, destructive nastiness - the poison in the body politic and they're nurses - who'd suspect them?

Fortunately Hecate is absent. Excellent version, imagined in a shadowy subterranean bunker, with uniforms and iconography reminiscent of Soviet Russia.

The witches are particularly chilling-their invocation ritual is not for the squeamish! I used this version to teach the play to a class of recalcitrant y9s, and it really gripped them- after the second lesson they were asking for more!

Fabulous production and acting. Great introduction to the play for students too. Amazing production.

Patrick Steward and Kate Fleetwood are amazing For school students this is a really good version which should engage them well.

It is true to the text and excellent production. I have lent it to many of my students and it has gripped them and made the play very real and up to date for them.

I saw the stage production in Chichester. I had to personally congratulate Patrick Stewart on the brilliance of the whole show The opening scene of the release is noisy, and the wounded character's lines are barely discernable.

I will show the classic version first and show clips from the more modern version. I want students to hear and appreciate Shakespeare without all the bells, whistles, and shock value add-ons.

Once they have that foundation, then they can compare a classic version to a more modern take on the story. I like both McKellen and Judi Dench, who in this production are at an earlier stage in their careers, so I grabbed this DVD without having seen it before.

I must say, I was surprised that it was entirely on stage, beginning with the small cast sitting in a circle - the sort of thing you might see put on by a small theatrical group.

It wasn't even as lavish as Olivier's Henry V, which began with heavily made-up actors against painted backdrops in something like the old "Globe" theatre and slowly expanded to live outdoor action.

This Macbeth" had no scenery, almost no props, and no sweeping outdoor vistas or massed troops. In short, it was done as it was written, as a stage play.

The entire load was on the shoulders of the cast, and they bore it well, from the smaller roles up to the two leads, McKellen and Dench, who need no praise from me to enhance their reputations!

If you're like me, you need two Macbeths - the big Polanski production when you're in the mood for spectacle, and this one when you want to enjoy Shakespeare rendered by two great actors and good support.

Judi Dench is the best Lady MacBeth ever, and Ian McKellen is his usual fearless self, willing to do anything to make the character real and give him impact--in this case, drooling all over himself as Banquo's ghost drives him mad.

When I first reviewed this, I thought, and wrote, that the disc had something wrong with it. However, it now seems that the problem was with my machine.

This version is my favorite performance of Macbeth. As Lady Macbeth Dench gives a stirring performance as the villain who started it all!

The extra features offered on this DVD version is a valuable addition. Particularly the Explaination of the play with McKellen. Very helpful for a first timer to follow the story.

I saw this production onstage in London in the warehouse where it was produced by Trevor Nunn in the 's. Nunn had been trying for years to get "Macbeth" right, but kept missing the mark till this one.

It is shattering. Once you've experienced Judi Dench as Lady Macbeth, none other will ever do. This petite woman's enormous power is all-encompassing, and Ian McKellan is equally fine in the title role.

All the supporting players are stunning as this was a true ensemble production, and many have gone on to have major film careers.

If you want a Macbeth, this is THE one to get. This is Macbeth stripped down to the character, relationships, text and truth. Excellent cast.

See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Probably the best production of Macbeth around. Ian McKellen is very good in the main role as Macbeth, and very convincing, likewise with Judi Dench.

The production is quite long and slow, but then again Shakespeare always is. Compared to other productions I've seen, this is by far the best. This is a dark play , played darkly and intensely in close-up in the dark.

Probably the best Macbeth in film version. It lacks the epic quality of Orson Wells' version , but sticks to the script better and certainly keeps you close to the action at every point.

A TV film of a famous Stratford production with two of England's greatest actors. Keep it by you to assess all other productions.

I had seen snips from the plotting of Macbeth and his Lady.

This is the best production of Macbeth! It's entertaining while being true to the play. It's excellent to use along side the play while teaching.

Students love it! You may want to use subtitles as they purposely slur the words and have heavy background noise. Later it will settle down to clear siliquae but still nice to read.

Everyone actors and we finally get into the feel of the play and have the fun of overacting not yelling but gesticulating. This will not be the last time things have changed to match the movie and not the play.

It is a tad unnerving and to find witches replaced with ghoulish nurses is a tad stretching. The time and place are different so the politics may not be as effective.

And of course, being Shakespeareised we get the popular history of the real Macbeth skewed. The bottom line is good actors but so may things out of place and so much effort to make this presentation unique made this presentation unique and not Shakespeare but Director: Rupert Goold.

The description says this is a Region 1 disc -- U. So I thought I was safe buying it. It also does list it is PAL format, but I had never known that there was anything to that NTSC is the other format -- and, as it turns out, the important factor in this case, but I had never known i needed to watch for anything other than the Region designation.

As it turns out, this is NOT a Region 1 disc. It is Region 0 which I also did not know existed. And there's the rub: the U. Had the Region code on the listing been correct, I would have had to look it up at that point to understand what I was purchasing and would have learned that the PAL designation made it a no-go for me.

I almost didn't watch past the opening scene. But thank goodness I made it past that exclamation point such care is taken with every sentence that you really do hear every word.

There are certain things I heard for the first time. What I enjoy the most about this rendition of Macbeth is how bone chillingly scary it is.

The three Weird sisters are hilarious in their merciless treatment of Macbeth. Especially the one that hushes him when he chased her. Lady Macbeth is by far the most well acted performance of the role yet.

She reminds me of a crack head on skid row when she is wandering in the night. Even the actor walking on the table does it with style.

Love it. Oh yeah. This Macbeth film makes me hunger for chocolate cake, sandwiches and wine. While Lady Macbeth is a little melodramatic and her dynamic with her husband is less than stellar, the way they use Macbeth himself to evoke Stalin is brilliant.

Patrick Stewart really brings his A-game trying to be both the wolf-of-war Macbeth and the is-he-insane-or-just-emotioinal Stalin.

Dench and McKellan riveting. Sadly I thought the production. Lack lustre. Very little spark between the other characters.

Report abuse. I didn't realise that this was a televion play which lasted approx 3 hrs or so but it was interesting as I have not studied any Shakespare.

It was good for my daughter to help with her short piece of homework for her primary school project. One person found this helpful. Ponderous and a bit pretentious.

This Macbeth" had no scenery, almost no props, and no sweeping outdoor vistas or massed troops. Bonus extras including interview with Sir Ian McKellen about the production.
